A dichotomy familiar to all individuals is the “good cop, bad cop” gig; the same duality applies to Michael Dobson’s custom job on a 1986 BMW R80RT. The bike originated as a New Zealand Police R80T that was one of several that Dobson had put together; since then, the bike has morphed into a hybrid of a bobber and chopper: the “bopper.” With new BMW components – a 21” R80GS front wheel, and headlight and forks from a R100CS among them – and a modified, white-gray petrol tank from a Keeway Cruiser, the bike is a lighter beast. Nevertheless, the classic black-and-white look and pre-war logo preserves the bike’s revered history.
