A Glimpse Into the Scrublands of Europe

“Scrublands” gives a rare glimpse into the lives of people who French photographer Antoine Bruy met while hitchhiking throughout Europe. Reminiscent of Eric Valli’s “Off the Grid” photo series the images follow individuals and families to their outposts on the edge of farmland and wilderness. Whether by choice, because of poverty, or through some combination of the two, the people Bruy encountered have slipped away from modern civilization, living off the land as their ancestors may have more than a hundred years ago. They stay in rustic homes with salvaged and handmade furniture. They get by with the help of basic technology such as radios and domestic animals such as dogs and horses. Staring into or away from Bruy’s camera, the people show a toughness beyond their years, an attitude built up while working day in and day out for their survival.
Bruy focused his lens on Europe from 2010-2013 and plans to continue his project in the USA next year.
