A Historic Home Renovation in Patù, Italy

View all 17 Photos

After years of abandonment and decay, this historic home in Patù, Italy, was renovated by the architect Luca Zanaroli. In its first life, the house was lived in and used in conjunction with a horse barn. Today, remnants of its past remain, in the form of the patina on the interior courtyard, refurbished stable doors incorporated into the home, and antique watering troughs that now serve as sinks, among many other elements. The floor features the original concrete tiles, pigmented and patterned in an earthy and intricate display. Restored as needed with lime and cement, the floors and walls are pigmented to reflect light and resemble local varieties of stone. In the kitchen and dining room, there stands a stone fireplace and a glazed door with a burnished steel frame. Light pours through the windows in the door, which leads to the outdoor dining patio and garden. Inside and out, the home is textured with furniture made of wood, leather, and metal, classic materials that speak to the building’s past while making it a hospitable place to enjoy in the present.
