À La Plage, À La Piscine by Gray Malin

Photographer Gray Malin is well familiar with getting a new perspective on things, especially since his work for À La Plage, À La Piscine. The series of aerial photographs of sandy beaches, pristine pools, and the open sea are taken from helicopters that hover above the scene. The result is an astonishing emergence of people patterns upon the landscape, and yet, the clarity and colorfulness of the photographs lend them an illustrated quality. People sunbathing on brightly striped beach towels and swimmers dotting the lanes of a long pool are transformed into mere icons that distort our natural sense of scale. While it is fun to imagine whether these individuals knew they were being watched, or to play a mental “Where’s Waldo,” the elegance and unique style of Malin’s photographs is certainly no laughing matter.
