A Single House in Belas

View all 32 Photos

Designed by Estúdio Urbano Arquitectos, this home was built inside Belas Clube de Campo, a private condominium in Portugal. The house balances exposure and privacy, as its large windows and outdoor pool open the space to natural light while its landscaping and concrete wall enclose the property. The tall balconies add drama to the division between the indoor and outdoor areas, increasing the difference in height between the house and the garden. That the house is bold and boxy while the greenery is wispy and irregular also invites comparison of the two spheres. Outside, the gray of the cobbled driveway offers a cool complement to the beige house. Meanwhile, inside, the white walls and furnishings contrast with the dark wood floors, panels, and fireplace. The gray of the solar shades brings spectrum of shades together and, being translucent and hazy, further plays on the idea of harmonizing public and personal elements. Photography by Joao Morgado
