Anthropocene by David Thomas Smith

Anthropocene, by definition, is the chronological impact of human activity on the planet’s ecosystems.
Such is the title of David Thomas Smith‘s aerial art series, which is composed from countless satellite images of the world’s transition from sprawling forest to bustling metropolis. Tiny dots and speckles of green weave together to show how tiny we are, but how large the reach of our urban colonization has become. Smith has also taken mirror images of several locations to create patterns, effectively transforming raw data into a dizzying tapestry of the human populous. The illusions that pop out as a result are mystifying; locations such as Dubai become aquamarine blankets of circuitry, while Western Australia’s dusty design appears as though it could have been taken from the droll sands of Mars.
