At $5 a pack, art is a now an easy-access commodity that can be purchased through a simple visit to the Art-o-mat. Instead of dispensing their usual product, vintage cigarette machines are refurbished to distribute little packs of art – and without the health risk. Originally a singular installation piece from artist Clark Whittington, the Art-o-mat has multiplied its presence to inhabit art galleries, universities, and even Whole Food markets, and is now stocked with the works of many local artists and collaborators from Artists in Cellophane. Each machine itself is a work of art, uniquely different in its build and look though all are branded by a markedly vintage air; similarly, each pack takes on a different style, completely dictated by the artist-in-charge, and contains enough goodies to satisfy any artistic craving. The Art-o-mat is a machine for the masses, spreading the good news at locations all around the country to promote art consumption as a healthy, pleasurable habit.
