BeeLine: Intuitive Navigation

View all 9 Photos

Even the most experienced cyclists have gotten lost at one point or another; cue sheets and modern GPS systems will only get you so far before you have to stop and decode the nearly incomprehensible directives. Stripped of superfluous tech, the aptly-named “BeeLine” simplifies navigation to the bare essentials. Based on a compass’ naturally-occurring movement, this clever circular device mounts on your handlebars and lets intuition lead the way.

With this clear-cut interface, there’s no such thing as a wrong turn.

At the heart of this innovation lies the concept of fuzzy navigation: “In the city, being told which turns to take is a hindrance, not a help, so BeeLine simply points you in the general direction to your destination and tells you the distance to go.” Pared-down to an accelerometer, digital compass, and gyroscope, the compact device gives you just enough information to find your own way home. With this clear-cut interface, there’s no such thing as a wrong turn. Not only does it remove the stress of taking an unfamiliar route, but it allows you to fully engage in your ride and explore like never before while an easy-to-read e-Paper LCD display and minimal graphics make it easy to keep your eyes on the road – so you can “take turns that feel safe, when they feel safe.”. Equipped with a waterproof screen, months of battery life (micro USB rechargeable) and a sturdy silicone strap, there’s no need to worry about the safety of your new tech, either — just snap it onto your bike, set a destination via the free smartphone app, and go. Although creators (and avid cyclists) Mark Jenner and Tom Putnam have yet to move from prototype to production, you can help them out – and get your own BeeLine — by backing their kickstarter.

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
