The Brot Planter Lamp

An ingenious product that aims to create a dialogue between food and lighting design.

Designed by Caterina Vianna and Ferran Gesa, co-founders of the Barcelona-based Benditas studio, the Brot planter lamp brings something fresh into modern living spaces. Doubling as a convenient planter and creative lamp, Brot – which means “sprout” in Catalan – highlights a growing demand for accessible, healthy food and multifunctional objects. Brot has a simple design that looks good anywhere. Made from terracotta, the top element houses the light, while the bottom acts as a seed germinator and planter. A stainless steel tray within the planter holds the seeds. A screen redirects light to the sprout as well as to the rest of the room. The opening in the middle provides access to the growing sprouts while allowing the greenery to become a decorative accent.

The Brot planter lamp comes with easy instructions. The user only has to soak the seeds in the tray according to their specific germinating time, place the tray into the terracotta germinator, underneath the light, and then keep the seeds damp as they sprout into green plants. The design aims to provide an easy solution to grow food inside a compact apartment. For example, pea seeds require only 4-6 days to grow before they can become part of a healthy salad. The studio also wants to create a link between food and furniture, with future designs following a similar theme. Benditas launched Brot at this year’s Stockholm Furniture Fair, in the Greenhouse category. Photographs© Benditas.
