Caja Oscura by Javier Corvalán

Inspired by the work of his film director client, Javier Corvalán scales the camera obscura from just a “camera” – Latin for vaulted chamber – to a “caja,” or house. Caja Oscura is a joining of two volumes, the upper portion attracting the most attention with its corrugated metal façade and 25-degree tilt that reveals the living room and kitchen spaces. The tilting box, which is operated at will, relies on a delicate balance of mass but also crosses into the realm of calculative physics through optics. When the space opens up to the surrounding environment of Asunción, a real, inverted image of the same scenery is projected on the interior walls of the house. Both the physical and the projection are ready to serve as artistic motivators for the resident film director’s own visions, as Caja Oscura secretly houses the treasured ideas and workspace under its mobile roof.
