Cardboard Bike by Izhar Gafni

If you thought bike riding alone was green enough, think again.  This bike is made of 95% recycled materials. Not only is it an eco friendly choice to bike to work, this ride has green bones as well. Izhar Gafni is an Israeli mechanical engineer who created the Cardboard Bike. Inspired by a canoe he saw made of cardboard “I went home and it sort of disturbed me. This canoe made out of cardboard was sitting in the back of my head… and it suddenly struck my mind; ‘Why not make a bicycle out of cardboard?'” Gafni said in a short documentary made by filmmaker Giora Kariv. He spoke to three different Israeli engineers and they all reached the same conclusion: “It is impossible.”
However, Gafni didn’t give up on the idea.  He set out to design a bike that was not only eco friendly but also wallet friendly. Since the material used was mostly recycled and inexpensive to begin with, it only cost $9 to $12 to produce. The material used is waterproof and quite strong, holding well over 400 pounds. It is completely constructed of cardboard, from the wheels to the seat. Durable, green, lightweight, cheep it answers every skeptic’s questions: yes, yes, yes, and yes.
