“Casa en el Lago” Lakehouse in Rural Colombia

Dubbed “Casa en el Lago,” this lakehouse by the architecture office De La Carrera Cavanzo can be found in Sesquile, Colombia. The construction was envisioned as a simple structure that even a child might draw. The architects then built upon the iconic Monopoly house shape, adding a deck and an overlapping glass volume. They textured the facade with regional materials such as slate and stone, digging into the imagery embedded in the surrounding landscape and in the human imagination. Outside, the deck and glass-encased patio look over the hillside, garden, and lake. Inside, one can still glimpse these views through the sliding glass doors and floor-to-ceiling windows in the common area. The impressive living room features a stone wall with a fireplace built into it, a wood-lined floor and ceiling, blackened beams and pillars, and a smaller lofted lounge. The details and places to rest give the overall space a true sense of being a home.
