Christmas Tree Made of Firewood

The Charity Tree was created by Hello Wood in collaboration with Design Terminal and Hungarian Interchurch Aid. The installation stands in a busy city square of Budapest, Hungary, where many people can engage with the sustainable design. Made entirely of wood, the tree sculpture was built in five days from 5,000 logs. Check out the construction in slow motion on Vimeo.

The finished display stands 36 feet tall and is topped with a star. During the day, people may admire the natural wood grain and even step inside the “chapel-like sacred inner space.” At night, the tree is lit by blue lights by Philips Hungary, taking on a snowy look.

The installation is a reward in and of itself. Nonetheless, the project gives back to the community in a tangible way, too. All of the firewood used will be donated to underprivileged families when the “tree” comes down in January.
