City Remnants by BRUT Collective

A collaborative exhibition that explores architectural and archetypal forms.

Founded by five designers – Ben Storms, Linde Freya Tangelder, Bram Vanderbeke, Cédric Etienne, Charlotte Jonckheer, and Nel Verbeke – BRUT Collective represents the collaborative spirit of a young generation of Belgian designers. While they approach different themes in their work, the five designers share an affinity for architectural forms and experimental designs. Ancient archetypes and organic shapes also define the group’s work. The City Remnants exhibition brings together different objects and sculptures that perfectly represent the common thread that connects BRUT Collective’s different creatives. The show explores the forms and functions of urban living with bold but minimal designs that create an architectural landscape in the Carwan Annex art gallery space.

Designed to serve more than just a functional purpose, the installation offers a sensory experience. The show also investigates archetypal forms in contemporary cityscapes. The designs are raw yet at the same time refined. Simple shapes and duplicated shapes complement asymmetrical designs and organic surfaces. Materials like concrete and steel appear alongside marble and wood. The installation features a fresh take on street furniture; stools and a bench, lighting, a mirror, and modular shelving highlight the parallel between public and private spaces. Together, they create an urban setting that explores materiality and form as well as the relationship between the individual and the collective.
