Creative Lighting Design: The Lighting Lamp By Jiyoun Kim

Inspired by the old Korean saying “Being struck by a thunder out of blue sky”, this creative lighting design hides a deeper meaning behind its sculptural shape. The expression refers to overcoming challenges and rising above a storm cloud by changing one’s perspective. The message stands at the heart of the Lighting Lamp. The table lamp is the creation of designer Jiyoun Kim and recently made its worldwide debut at this year’s London Design Festival. Crafted with traditional as well as modern techniques, the lamp features a stainless steel base and neck; the latter acts as the “lighting” and also provides support to the cloud-like glass structure.

The creative lighting comes in four versions that reference different times of the day. Daytime boasts a golden base and an opaque white top. The Early Morning version features a polished silver support and opaque gray cloud, while Midnight comes with smoke colored glass. The most vibrant of them all, Sunset recreates the colors of the setting sun, with a pink and light blue gradient complementing the rose gold base. Photographs © Jiyoun Kim.
