Bressanone, Italy
bergmeisterwolf is an architecture studio led by Gerd Bergmeister and Michaela Wolf, working between Brixen (IT) and Rosenheim (DE). Their projects move from houses and hotels to cultural and landscape work, mostly in alpine settings where topography, weather and local craft set the brief.
Design begins with a close read of place—existing structures, paths, and ground lines—then introduces a few decisive acts: digging into the slope, extending a wall, splicing old timber with new concrete or stone. Historic techniques are studied and reused, contemporary ones are tested, and traces are left visible so additions read clearly. The result is calm geometry, durable materials, and spaces that feel anchored to terrain and everyday use. Alongside practice, the studio teaches, serves on juries, and collaborates with universities and museums.
Recognition includes Italian Architect of the Year (2019), Best Architects awards (2016, 2018, Gold 2020), the Italian Architect Prize for renovation (2018), Dedalo Minosse (2011, 2019), Città di Oderzo (2013, 2014, 2020), repeated Häuser des Jahres selections since 2012, and a 2022 EU Mies nomination. Exhibitions range from the Biennale di Venezia to the Biennale di Pisa.
