Launched by the city of Seoul, the Hangang Art Park program invited four artists and designers to create art installations and sculptural objects to populate the parks near the Han River. Following the initiative’s theme of “suim”, which translates to “rest”, the Dokkaebi conceptual stools designed by Jiyoun Kim allow the user to enjoy a moment of quiet and contemplation among nature. The 24 stools take inspiration from Korean folklore and nature. The Dokkaebi is a troll-like creature which can easily change its appearance when needed. Consequently, the stainless steel cylinders boasts a mirror surface that perfectly reflects the surrounding environment, helping to integrate the objects into the landscape.
At the top, eight different colors recreate the hues of the nearby trees as they appear throughout the year, in a beautiful homage to the passage of time and to the changing seasons. In the middle of the park, the sculptural objects become a part of nature as they mirror their surroundings, while the top sections seem to float in mid-air, giving the entire installation a surreal look and feel.
