Elegant Historical Apartment Renovation in Lisbon

Called “House in Mouraria,” this apartment is found in historic Lisbon. The Portuguese home was recently renovated by architect José Andrade Rocha. Balancing old and new, the predominantly white interior is textured with the original detailing. There is a dark gray area to break up the otherwise rather monochrome space. Functional as well as visually arresting, the inset nook reveals the bedrooms and the bathroom behind sliding doors. The sleeping areas are starkly designed with just a bed and a built-in shelf or closet, and the bathroom gleams in glossy painted brick. Throughout the apartment, the design makes use of natural, timeless materials such as wood, stucco, and brick. This palette makes details such as the marble-looking bench and the metal balcony railing pop. All of these elements are tucked away behind the entryway door, which is painted blue as if to hint at the surprises inside.
