Ernesto Burgos

Don’t expect to take a seat and relax among these couches! In “the tone was a synthesis of all the voices they had ever heard” Ernesto Burgos creates a dialogue between upended, vintage couches that have been modified to stand as hybrids of their past lives and sculpture. The couches represent a wide variety of styles though the common thread that connects each vertical tower is the reframing of each piece. A white couch is defaced with bright orange paint splatters and prints, while another is reduced to its frame and hanging pieces of upholstery. As the title of the work suggests, the individual couches sing their own anthem, but strike a harmonious chord when interpreted as a collection.
