Fire Made Still

German visionary Katharina Grosse has applied the art of painting beyond the classical conventions of surface and space. Spray paint engulfs structure and landscape in this three-dimensional work as the Fort Tilden aquatics building at Rockaway Beach in Queens, NY is transformed from its state of decay. Wispy patches of bright red and orange engulf walls and their surroundings – pavement, sand, trees, and even sea grass – like rapidly spreading flames. The formerly abandoned structure – deemed structurally unsafe in 2013 in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy – is resurrected through the use of vibrant color and the dramatic, gestural nature of Grosse’s signature action painting style. Commissioned by MoMA PS1 director Klaus Biesenbach, who was inspired by Grosses’ past work for Prospect 1 in New Orleans, the public installation offers a temporary chance at new life before the building is ultimately demolished later this year: “I was deeply moved that a building just waiting to be taken down was given this temporary, proud and fragile beauty.” Photoraphy by Pablo Enriquez.

Lizzie

Lizzie Wright is an aspiring artist and designer with a passion for the written word. While she works on her BFA in Industrial Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), she spends her (rare) spare time riding around Providence on her trusty Cannondale and drinking lots of coffee. She is especially fascinated by the dichotomy between aesthetic form and function, which has an immense influence on her work. As a lover of the natural world, Lizzie plans to focus on Nature, Culture, and Sustainability Studies to pursue a more efficient future for design. Read more by visiting her website
