The gilded words printed on the bike frames of Factory Five’s fixed-gear bicycles carry a sense of both ownership and community. The custom-built bikes feature no-fuss frames and a sleek look that lets the construction and quality of each bike speak for itself. The founders bring a history of retrofitting old Chinese frames, and use that cultural connection as a springboard to modernizing the bike scene in Shanghai. Factory Five’s atelier is also making moves to improve the network of bike enthusiasts, as the shop offers a space for individuals who wish to stop by and work up some improvements of their own.
