San Francisco Bay area artist Marshall Elliott has been making work about precision destruction, entropic transformation and missing elements for the past fifteen years. To make Gun Control (Death Valley), he cast an oversized handgun (about 36″ long) in ice and left it to melt on the valley floor in the spring of 2013, highlighting the fragile political nature of the contemporary conversation around gun control with an strangely out-of-place object situated in the vastness of the American West.
