Herringbone Objects by Phil Cuttance

Handmade objects that look like CNC machined products.

Clean and strikingly precise, the Herringbone collection tricks the mind in a creative way. Designed by Phil Cuttance, the objects boast an eye-catching herringbone pattern that looks almost too perfect to be real. While admiring the range, CNC machines and 3D printing spring to mind. Yet the designer only uses traditional techniques to complete each item by hand. After creating the custom folding pattern and projecting it onto a flat sheet, Cuttance then folds it by hand to make the herringbone-shaped relief. The next step involves casting resin into the patterned mold, with further hand finishes applied onto the 3D piece before casting yet another mold to make the objects. And it looks like this complex – but also cleverly simple – process offers impressive rewards.

Beautifully detailed and intricate, the collection highlights the dichotomy between the manual manufacturing processes and the CNC machined-like patterns. Admiring the products at a closer range, however, one can admire the small imperfections which not only affirm their handmade nature, but also give them an artisanal quality and distinctive charm. The range includes smaller and larger vases as well as trays and pen pots, all available in beautiful colors. Photographs© Phil Cuttance.
