Elegant and minimal, the High House provides a modern interpretation of a classic winter chalet. Designed by Paris-based architecture studio Delordinaire, the distinctive structure is anything but ordinary. It was built in a hilly region of Quebec, Canada on long stilts that elevate it above the ground. Apart from the striking appearance, this decision also created a protected ground floor area. Since the entire structure stands so high, inhabitants enjoy uninterrupted views of the surrounding hills and a direct view over to the Mont Saint Anne from the living room. As a bonus, bright sunshine floods the interior throughout the day.
White concrete cladding and corrugated steel panels enhance the clean lines of the structure and the overall minimalist aesthetic. In winter, when a thick blanket of snow covers the ground, the bright house blends into the scenery almost completely. During the summer months, its immaculate cladding complements the fresh green colors of the surrounding hills, standing out in the landscape as a white monolith. Photo credits: Delordinaire.
