In Pieces, Hyper-Realistic Lego Art

View all 17 Photos

Rather than having us merely peel away the intrinsic and symbolic layers of human identity in their work, Nathan Sawaya and Dean West would like to deconstruct the complexities of their chosen element—LEGO bricks. In their collaboration, entitled “In Pieces,”presented by Avant Gallery at the Openhouse Gallery in New York,  numerous prints of solitude and melancholy are broken up by incredible installations of LEGO-built objects. Sawaya’s LEGO doppelgangers of everyday objects and shapes serve to compliment the concepts dictated by West, which choose to remind us of “culture’s commercialization of individual identity.” Each picture is accompanied by its own attributed LEGO objects—the only physical thing we can collect from each frightening scene of isolation. These objects eventually become the easiest thing to identify within each deserted print; nothing more than common things that somehow have become even more synthetic and unreal.
