An Innovative Folding Pod Design Born from the Interplay of Elegance, Adaptability and High-Tech Precision.

Ecuador, known for its rich cultural heritage and stunning landscapes, is also a hotbed for architectural and design innovation. Case in point? The work of architects Juan Ruiz and Amelia Tapia. Their latest creation, the IWI folding pod, is an eloquent testament to their ingenuity, merging architectural sophistication with the accuracy of Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) technology.

Constructed of wood through advanced CNC milling, the prefab IWI is specially designed for mass production, ease of assembly, and – above all – adaptability. This flexible living space can be compressed or extended, morphing from a shelving and storage unit into a fully functional living area, according to the needs of its users.

The architects have infused a minimal space with unlimited potential, providing everything necessary for a variety of functions. To create the ingenious folding pod, they combined two modules and a flexible folding structure. The rear module serves as a storage hub, housing seating, tables, drawers, shelves, and other essentials. Moreover, it features a suite of customizable amenities such as a sink, lighting, electrical outlets, and switches. The IWI can function both “On-grid” or “Off-grid”, demonstrating a commitment to versatility and user convenience. The front module also acts as the entrance to the space. Gliding on wheels, the canvas and wood structure unfolds like an accordion. This allows the IWI to adapt to its surroundings and user needs, highlighting its user-centric design.

IWI is perfect for a variety of spaces. For example, in one case, the owners installed the folding pod on a terrace with stunning views of the Pichincha volcano’s slopes in northern Quito, Ecuador. Here, the IWI serves as a studio or workspace, comfortably accommodating two people. The rear module is equipped with all necessary office furniture, including space for a printer and a cafeteria area with a hidden sink.

At its core, the IWI design revolutionizes the live/work experience, seamlessly transitioning between indoor and outdoor settings in response to the spectrum of activities undertaken. Fully extended, the IWI can accommodate 2-4 people. It can also be only partially extended or fully closed when not in use to maximize outdoor space.
