Dollar for Dollar, an exhibit of sculpture and paintings by Kerry James Marshall, is soon to be on display at the Jack Shainman Gallery in New York City. The opening reception will be Tuesday, September 10, from 5-8pm, and the exhibit will run until October 12 of this year. The gallery can be found at 524 West 24th Street, and hours are Tuesday-Saturday, from 10am-6pm.
Based in Chicago, Marshall is a sculptor, installation artist, photographer, and painter. He believes that the art world is not a “free” space but rather a part of the racialized system and economy in which we live. Combining high art and social justice, his work brings the Western canon and black identity into conversation with one another. In Dollar for Dollar, Marshall delves into the culture of consumption, a theme reflected in the titles of his work–99 cent piece, Red Hot Deal, Why Pay More, On Sale Black Friday, Black Owned, and Buy Black.
