Kris Scheifele

Painting is by definition the practice of applying paint to a surface (support), the term itself describes both the act and the result of the action. Kris Scheifele breaks the boundaries and pushes our imagination further creating this very unique form of art in which she investigates paint’s physicality. After thirty to fifty layers of acrylic paint are applied to a support, these slabs are pulled up, sliced, carved, and/or peeled. Free of a support and hung directly on the wall, the paint then performs by bending, sagging, and stretching. Meant to make us think about cycles in life as well as cycles in art, Scheifele’s work ends up being rather hard to “fit” in conventional “categories” since it rides the fine line between painting and sculpture.
