La Fresca Chair

Andalusia is well-known for a rich artistic history that brought some of the greatest creative minds, from Picasso to Velázquez, into the world – but little is known of the influence of the modest “silla andaluza,” or Andalusian chair. Its folk-art style and form are familiarly formulaic, with a simple wooden frame and back, and a seat made from woven reeds. Created by Damien Lopez of Leblume and Granada Perrero Studio, La Fresca is a modernization of this classic silhouette. The accent chair pays homage to tradition in the hand-woven technique, which continues along the back and arms to create a spare, geometric form. The juxtaposition of humble materials with the chair’s sleek modern shape makes for a beautiful and fascinating piece that showcases both culture and craft, past and present.
