At first sight, the striking photographs created by Paris-based photographer Nicolas Rivals stun with their majestic beauty and mysterious atmosphere. But the beautiful ‘La Línea Roja’ series has a deeper meaning that goes beyond its aesthetic power. Taken in various wild landscapes spread across Spain, the images establish a dialogue between man-made objects and nature, but also between clean geometry and raw, organic beauty.
Using long exposure, the photographer captured the neon installations in the best possible light, providing a surreal portrait of quiet, peaceful nature at night illuminated by the glow of pink and red geometric shapes. A triangle partly submerged in water, positioned between two rocks, aligns itself with the horizon. A single, thin line glowing with a bold red color marks the entrance to a dark cave. A rectangular shape, reminiscent of Kubrick’s monolith, rises from a rocky landscape to frame a part of the starry sky. On a side of a mountain, the cold white snow glows red as a shape buried beneath seems to reach towards the surface. Eerie, captivating and beautiful, ‘La Línea Roja’ is a fascinating study of complementing contrasts. Photo credits: Nicolas Rivals.
