City Lights is an iconic bookstore and a travel destination in its own right. Founded in 1953 by poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti and Peter D. Martin, the book shop was influenced by the Beat Generation, alternative culture and rejection of the conventional. Those influences remain to this day, present in the selection of hand-picked titles. And now for a bit of trivia for history buffs: City Lights is the first all-paperback bookstore in the US.
