Usually a day spent at the beach means building sandcastles with elaborate, individualized structures featuring conical points and stony details. For Chad Wright, sand is the soul of his suburbia. Master Plan: Phase One juxtaposes playtime with the austerity and uniformity found often associated with postwar suburbia. Spinning the concept of Levittown, Wright builds his own colony of miniature sand-houses, which are then washed away by the ominously approaching shoreline. Whether this is a social commentary on the current real estate market, or an even grander warning pointed at the now American Dream, Wright has yet to reveal these developments in the next phases of this series.
