Jason D’Aquino‘s work strongly suggests two things about him: he is a miniaturist and – if not an antiquarian outright – a lover of found artifacts. A significant collection of his drawings measure just an inch by an inch and a half, and they are deftly tucked into matchbooks he’s salvaged, some with matches left inside. The content of the graphite drawings is often political, and sometimes cinematographic, evoking dramatic vignettes from classic sci-fi and noir films. In addition to matchbooks, other miniature/found substrates include two-hundred year old animal-skin vellum and pages from antique documents and manuscripts.
