Medieval Restoration by Sterna Nisyros

Sterna Nisyros Residences proves that castles don’t belong exclusively in the realm of fantasy – though it’s hard to believe that this holiday retreat in the medieval Castle of Pantoniki is real. Dating all the way back to the 17th century, the traditional two story home was the first in the Emporeios settlement to be restored after a 1933 earthquake caused its devastating collapse.
Thanks to exhaustive research, photographic archives, and a thorough excavation by Giorgo Tsironis, i.landarchitects and Dolihos architects were able to honor authentic construction methods and building materials. Situated atop a hill that overlooks fields of untouched land with a view of the glistening Aegan Sea, the home pays homage to its heritage as it lives on in today. A simple stone façade that shows signs of age conceals the modern infrastructure and an interior fit for royalty. White stone walls blend fluidly with minimal accents, high quality furniture, and plenty of natural light. It’s hard to imagine anything more serene than that cool, cavernous interior, but the outdoor living space may have it beat; between the rooftop lounge – complete with sunbeds and living room – and a terrace with a table big enough for a proper family meal, visitors have plenty of opportunity to absorb the breathtaking views. Sterna Nisyros hopes this will be the first in a series of restorations that will become a “meeting and socializing place for artists from Greece and all around the world” in a setting “where contemporary creation will interact with the various aspects of Nisyros’ unique environment.” Surely the stunning home will inspire the world over as an example of historic loyalty in modern design.
