Modern Utility by Ministry of Mass Design Collective

Ministry of Mass, a new design collective that questions and reforms consumer culture, creates sustainable furnishings that are long-lasting and multipurpose in order to make the most of our limited living space and natural resources. Here are four of our favorites from their Modern Utility series:

Pillow Table
While a Pillow Table may sound oxymoronic, Ministry of Mass has made this brain teaser a reality. A square slab of wood stacked atop four flat pillows, the Pillow Table functions as a side table and as spare pillows and a lap desk. The wooden component provides a small surface for resting coffee and magazines. The pillow cases, here shown in graduated shades of blue and green, zip to close and are easy to remove for washing. The pillow base may be adjusted so that the edges align or turn out at angles, for instance. Whether you prefer the pillar or helix look, or want to experiment with every season, the Pillow Table offers a clean, cool accent for your home. The color scheme may be changed on request. Sand not included.

Barrel Lamp
The industrial Barrel Lamp welds a lamp to the secure base of a barrel. The wide circular wooden base allows the lamp to stand on a table, shelf, or other surface. In order to illuminate a portion of a large space, the lamp’s bulb is exposed. Surrounding the bulb are a black steel tripod and handle that allow the lamp to be carried and hung a ceiling, hook, or wire. Portable and adaptable, the barrel lamp is designed for a home or workspace, in an indoor or outdoor setting. The lamp may be customized so that the length of the aqua-colored cable fits its intended primary space.

Bending Lamp
Drawing inspiration from the natural world, the Bending Lamp leans over you much like a tree branch. The beech wood lathe curves the soft light over your work or living space, bringing an organic look to modern design. The beech wood is secured to a concrete base with a single steel connector and three bolts. While embodying minimalism, this structure anchors the lamp for optimum stability. At the top of the arch, a notch catches the wire, which runs along the spine of the beech wood lathe, stitches into the bottom, and plugs into the wall. The Bending Lamp complements practically any space. My suggestion is to pair it with your comfiest reading chair and a book on the other kind of “lathe,” Ursula K. LeGuin’s The Lathe of Heaven.

Pillow Seat
The Pillow Seat is a three-piece chair held together with a strap. For structure, the chair is made from aluminum and a steam-bent beech frame. The “pillow” part of the chair is upholstered in fabric from Kvadrat, a leading European textile company that has its products in museums across the globe. A cam buckle strap holds the chair together and lends the design a pop of color. The models showcase the straps in teal and red, but, as with the Pillow Table, the color scheme for the Pillow Seat may be personalized on request.
