Monumental Coach House by Zecc Architects and BYTR

A cynic would consider a coach house to be simply a glorified garage. Zecc Architects, in collaboration with BYTR, proves all naysayers wrong with their recent project in Breukelen, Netherlands. Monumental Coach House converts the rudimentary space, dating back to 1760, into a modern home with tasteful touches of history and the residence’s roots. The most eye-catching display in the house is neither horse nor car, but another means of getting from point A to point B – the stairs. A grandiose, wooden switchback stair composes the core of the house, and draws the eye upward in awe of the high ceilings and ample light. The whole space exudes warmth, which is complemented by the wrought metal accents around the home and whimsical horse figureheads that introduce the stern with the whimsical light fixtures. Upstairs, a sense of the rustic is preserved through the triangular trusses that remain untouched, blending into the refurbished space as the interior décor.
