Norse Summer House in the Vega Archipelago

Built on the rocky isles of Vega, this spacious seaside cabin belongs to Alexander Mørk-Eidem, a Swedish director, and his siblings, who all wanted a summer home on their favorite childhood destination. The house was constructed on a hill, in view of the Atlantic Ocean and partially sheltered by the cliffs of the Trollvasstind. Designed by architects Erik Kolman Janouch and Victor Boye Julebäk, the modern cottage draws inspiration from traditional Norse boathouses, called “nausts.” Like the older local buildings, the home is composed of two attached volumes and cladded with tall, thin planks of graying wood. Inside, the space is more contemporary, yet the whitewashed walls and naturally finished floors echo the exterior lines. The subtle geometries of the rooms provide a backdrop for the sparse, strong furnishings, such as the kitchen table and the woodstove.
