Playful Wooden Family Home in Switzerland

View all 12 Photos

Designed and finished in 2015 by Kunik de Morsier Architectes, this wooden family home is built into the slope of its plot in the Jura-Nord Vaudois district of Switzerland. The square house has an unassuming exterior clad in naturally finished larch. Yet, the interior is an unusual but welcoming space that has an element of the jungle gym about it. The larch and fir frame and walls connect and slide into one another, revealing a unique construction. Additionally, white netting serves as a playful, soft, and permeable barrier along the stairs. The holes in the net contrast with the solid wood, giving texture to the home. Though cabin-esque, the house is actually more spacious and structured than the many traditional homes. The contemporary design contains four bedrooms, an office, a TV room, a comic book library, a playroom, a bathroom, and a kitchen and dining room. The children’s recreation area on the tiered ground floor is a particular standout because of its irregular surface and array of plush “stones” that mimic the landscape of the surrounding slopes, trails, and bike paths.
