Inspired by coastal architecture, this compact annex boasts glass and concrete walls, with a garden and terraces focusing the main living areas outdoors.

Located on the Pelješac peninsula in southern Croatia, this compact building used to be a summer kitchen, or a pretpec, which is the common term in the area of Dubrovnik. Architects Dora Lončarić and Marko Gusić, founding partners of Nekoliko and ARGU, respectively, collaborated on this project. Inspired by vernacular architecture and coastal living, the team transformed the auxiliary structure into a bright and open space while working within the confines of a limited footprint. Situated close to the main house, the volume is surrounded by vegetation and offers great views of the sea.

Using the small envelope as a source of inspiration rather than a constraint, the architects optimized the layout to enhance the feeling of space while rethinking the interiors for contemporary living. A large built-in element organizes the programs and conveniently houses different technical spaces, storage and kitchen functions. Subtle alterations in the interior geometry of the annex create a clearer hierarchy between spaces.

The redesigned structure also better responds to the challenges of the hot Mediterranean climate. A new opening allows for cross ventilation; this aperture works alongside adjustable shutters, effectively keeping the interiors cool during the summer without the need for air conditioning. Keeping in line with the principles of coastal life, the outdoor areas become main living spaces. A small garden and terraces invite the inhabitants outside to enjoy the surrounding greenery, sea views, and warm breeze.

Finally, the material palette reflects the need for durability and easy maintenance in a coastal climate. Rough concrete surfaces not only withstand the effects of high humidity and salt, but also add a wonderful tactility to the interiors. Frameless glass brings the landscape inside the volume while filling the interiors with light. Photography© Simone Bossi.
