Pure White Paper by Li Hongbo

Li Hongbo’s past experiences as a book editor and designer have influenced him to find the beauty in the pages, not just words. Calling upon the Chinese art of paper-cutting as his precedent, Hongbo seeks the third dimension in Pure White Paper, his collection at Dominik Mersch Gallery. Reminiscent of a cross between a slinky and a Post-It pad, each piece is composed of stacked sheets partially glued together so that the entire sculpture can unfold and fan out like an accordion. For many of the pieces that take on the human form – skulls, full-body representations, and busts – such transformations create new, corporeally unachievable realities for the body.
