The Red Bull Music Academy (RBMA) is a nomadic annual music festival that’s held in a different world city every year, putting the 60 pre-selected international participants together and surrounding them with musicians, producers and DJs. In the year of 2011, the festival was supposed to take place in Tokyo Japan but due to the devastating effects of the earthquake, the city of Madrid took over the project and had to design and prepare a space for the event within an urgent period of five months. An early 20th century industrial warehouse complex was selected for the location, the approach was to create a temporary structure based on the criteria of adaptability and the reversibility that would make it easy to complete. The result of the work conducted by architect Langarita-Navarro was a warehouse’s interior in the form of a fragmented urban style in which the variable relationship between proximity and independence, and preexistence and performance could offer unexpected stages to its community of inhabitants. Materials used also fulfilled the artists’ acoustic needs.
