Eerie and beautiful, the REM series made by Cologne-based photographer Florian W. Mueller explores dreams’ specific blend of real and surreal elements. The photographs allude to the nature of sleeping states in a subtle way, with a strikingly effective effect.
“Exploring dreams has always fascinated me. Especially the dreams in which one has the guess that it could be a dream, but is not sure. Just this feeling that something is wrong. Like here. The environment is not uncommon, there is no foreign body present, but something is wrong,” the photographer explains.
Shot in a dense forest, the images reveal a stunning natural landscape but appear, at a glance, completely ordinary. Fog envelops the area, adding a strange vibe to the scenes. The viewer soon discovers that the woodland is not what it seems. Suspended trunks hover above the ground. Others fall in peculiar angles. Moss-covered bark floats above the forest floors. By using familiar elements that belong to the environment, the photographer reproduces the distinctive feeling of knowing something is out of place in a dream while not being able to understand the true meaning of the intuition .
