Renovated Historical Apartments in Baixa

Part of a “Pombalino” building dating back to the 18th century, these old-meets-new spaces are short-term rentals in the Baixa district of Lisbon, Portugal. Renovated by Jose Adriano Arquitectos, the apartments keep the original tiles, wooden floors, and rafters. These elements are even allowed to be nostalgic and a little rough around the edges. The white paint on the rafters is left peeling, for example. Paired with secondhand items such as the wooden benches that furnish the living room, the structure makes the entering this space feel like a step back in time. Nonetheless, the painted and polished flats are more comfortable and contemporary than before. There are soft couches and lights in the den and smooth white walls with matching marble counters in the kitchen.
