Room on the Roof: An Artist Residency on Top of a Department Store

A new collaborative venture by the Rijksmuseum and the department store de Bijenkorf, “Room on the Roof” is an artist-in-residence program in Amsterdam. The residency takes place right on the rooftop of the illustrious de Bijenkorf building inside a historic tower-studio. Inside, the space is divided in half; on one side, there is a lounge in all-white, whereas, on the other, there is a lofted workspace and a sleeping area lined in naturally finished wood. In the middle, a black spiral staircase defines the boundary. The striking interior was designed by i29 Architects and built by Fiction Factory. Today, the artist Maartin Baas begins his residency, the first for “Room on the Roof.”
