What Ai Weiwei considers sacred is for the audience to discover through his six-part installation that details stages in his incarceration in China. S.A.C.R.E.D. presents a collection of dioramas inside which viewers will find model figures that depict scenes between the artist and the prison guards. Taking others through the same journey of humility, brutality, and difficulty, he strings together a narrative of Supper, Accusers, Cleansing, Ritual, Entropy, and Doubt. The scenes as preserved in their iron boxes almost position the viewer as a violator of what Ai Weiwei considers sacred, for the act of looking at the physical manifestation of his memory is undeniably personal.
Curated byMaurizio Bortolotti, ‘S.A.C.R.E.D.’ is part of Ai Weiwei‘s larger exhibition ‘Dispostion’, a collateral event of the 55th international art exhibition, presented across two venues: the Sant’Antonin church, and the Zitelle Complex, home of Zuecca project space, and has been realized in collaboration with London’s Lisson Gallery. the artist himself was forbidden to travel to the opening of his show, and so, his mother gao ying journeyed to the ‘City on Water’ to represent her son.
