Italian designer Giorgio Bonaguro wants to escape the confines of traditional lighting – and Silhouette, his newest series of pendant lamps, does just that. Stripped bare of conventional fabric or paper lampshades, the pieces highlight the metal structure that lies beneath with an unmistakable refinement. Welded borosilicate glass rods form simple yet fascinating geometric structures that outline the bulb and cast stunning “glass sketches” surrounding the form; subtle reflections on an adjacent wall or ceiling add an extra dimension to to the luminescent form. A brightly-colored cord gives the hanging light a certain playful pop that’s suited to practically any space. Hang one or several – available in a wide variety of shapes and colors – as a modern accent and a self-proclamation of design savvy. Named for their functional shadow, the Silhouette family will be presented this weekend at the the 2015 IDA Rio Design Fair in collaboration with Mercado Moderno Design Gallery.
