First, a brief culture lesson: “bach,” a New Zealand colloquialism, describes a small getaway home iconic to the emergence of New Zealand’s beach holiday culture. Shoal Bay Bach, designed by Parsonson Architects, embodies the simple pleasures and glories of relaxation and comfort. The bach is composed of two pavilions that are respectively offset along their length and connected through an outdoor deck. A morning deck and afternoon deck cater to the sun’s path so that light is constantly present. The wooden interiors add to the beachside ambience, as do the sliding glass doors and skylights that expose the bach’s interiors to the gentle New Zealand breeze.
