The name of Dragos Motica’s Slash Lamp, designed for Ubikubi, alludes to its confrontation of dualities: new or destroyed; beautiful or ugly; valuable or worthless. The hanging, cylindrical lamp is constructed of concrete and reinforcing wire, and the user has the choice of leaving the object as it was manufactured – smooth and solid, with an LED light that streams out from the bottom – or breaking it with a rock, exposing the grid of wire beneath and allowing light to pour through jagged, unique remnants of concrete. The intent of the object is to provoke and empower the user, allowing him or her to make a decision and examine yet another set of opposites: action or inaction.
