Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere

The image of tumbleweed blowing in the wind is an iconic representation of the abandoned desert landscape. Photographer Chris Sisarich takes this concept, that a singular object can localize a vast expanse to make it appear paradoxically emptier, to a higher level by introducing familiar objects lost in the open vacuum. In one photo of the series, “Somewhere in the Middle of Nowhere,” a dust-encrusted car, which used to be red but blends now into the rubble in the background, sits patiently awaiting an adventure that is not to be found. The scale of the desert is made ever the clear with the lone gas station – an ironic complement to the car – and the tiny people staring out at the sea of space.
