Summer House M by Mikael Bergquist

Located on the west coast of Sweden, Summer House M by Mikael Bergquist is a retreat house for an English family. The house is not only a getaway from home but also a means of crossing cultural boundaries through the physical, for the house is a derivative of a typical Swedish farm. The form is characterized by a simple gabled roof over a rectangular volume, and treats the kitchen and dining room as the central hub of the house. The large panels of glazing opens up the interior space to the surrounding green outside, and the resident family is able to enjoy the Sweden’s scenic landscape on a patio that stretches the entire length of the summer house. The kitchen is furnished in white with wooden accents, classically European because of the clean, uncluttered style. Still, the house manages to capture a rustic quality that chronicles the passage of time through the untreated wood of the façade, which is expected to gray over the years and mature into an aged and weathered look.
